Juan Carrera Scholz is one of our prestigious EMBAG2027 class members who shared a few valuable insights into his journey through the application process.
1. Could you please tell us a little bit about your current role and career background?
I work as a fractional CTO and Board-level Technology Advisor, supporting companies in defining strategies, modernising systems, and aligning technology decisions with long-term business goals. My career spans nearly two decades across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, leading global engineering teams and driving digital transformation in financial services, e-commerce, and wealth management. This international experience has shaped my leadership style and strengthened my ability to operate in complex, multicultural environments.
2. When did you first hear about the EMBA-Global programme and what made you apply?
I first heard about the programme in August 2024. I decided to apply because it aligns closely with my increasing involvement in my family business and my need to strengthen my strategic, financial, and investment capabilities to complement my technical background. The chance to study in both London and New York, and to engage with two of the world’s most influential technology and business ecosystems, made the programme the natural platform to support my long-term ambitions.
3. When did you start preparing your application?
I began preparing for the Executive Assessment at the beginning of August 2024, when I decided to pursue an Executive MBA but was still considering different programmes. By the end of September, I had committed to the EMBA-Global and started assembling the full application, including the essays, CV, and supporting documentation.
4. What did you spend the most time on – building your CV, writing the essays or getting the company sponsorship letter and reference?
I do not have company sponsorship, so most of my time was dedicated to preparing for the Executive Assessment and writing the essays. I wanted the essays to reflect my professional journey, my leadership values, and my long-term objectives with clarity and depth, which required careful reflection.
5. What should one focus on to increase the chances of being selected for the next round?
It is essential to articulate a clear purpose for choosing this specific programme, even if your post-MBA role is not fully defined. The admissions team wants to understand your motivation, the global perspective you are seeking, and how you will contribute to the cohort. In my case, the connection between the US tech landscape, the European business environment, and my long-term responsibilities within a family business was fundamental.
6. Did you connect with any alumni to get first-hand insights into the LBS-CBS experience?
Yes. I spoke with three alumni: one from the CBS Executive MBA, one from the LBS Executive MBA, and one who completed the EMBA-Global. Their insights into the academic experience, workload, and network were invaluable, and all strongly recommended the programme. These conversations helped confirm that the dual-campus structure aligned with my goals.
7. What words of wisdom would you have for anyone considering applying for EMBA-Global?
I would encourage applicants to reflect on the broader purpose of pursuing the programme, not only for career advancement but for personal growth. Highlight experiences that demonstrate your need for a global perspective and your ability to contribute meaningfully to the classroom. The programme values candidates who are both ambitious and self-aware, and who see education as part of a long-term journey rather than a short-term objective.
