About Me & Why I Made the Transition

Before starting my Masters in Management (MiM) at LBS, I studied International Affairs at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). While HSG is well-known for its business-focused disciplines, I decided to pursue a different path, focusing on politics instead. This meant that my classes mostly included topics like Comparative Politics, Political Theories, International Law, and Macroeconomics.
After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I found myself interested in several fields, so I took 1,5 years to work and explore what I truly wanted to pursue – a step I can definitely recommend to anyone. This time helped me identify my interest in and passion for consulting. To kickstart a career in this field, I decided to strengthen my business knowledge, which led me to the MiM programme at LBS.
How My Background Supports My Goals at LBS
Coming from a non-business background might initially seem like a hurdle, but it’s actually been one of my greatest assets. My studies in International Affairs equipped me with a unique approach to problem-solving, a global mindset, and the ability to analyse complex systems from different perspectives.
At LBS, this diversity is encouraged. The programme enables us to draw from our previous experiences, allowing me to bring fresh perspectives to group projects and case studies.
Tips and tricks for your application
If you’re applying to the MiM programme with a non-business background, here are my three key tips to help you stand out:
- Leverage Your Background: LBS encourages diversity, so embrace the fact that you have a different background. Highlight how your unique experiences can contribute to the cohort and set you apart.
- Tell Your Story: Use your application to explain why you chose your previous field of study, what motivated you to transition to business now, and how the MiM aligns with your long-term goals. Sharing this journey helps LBS understand your perspective and aspirations.
- Get Connected: Networking is very helpful. Reach out to current LBS students, especially those with similar non-business backgrounds. The Ambassador page on the LBS website is a great starting point. Many students (myself included!) are happy to share insights, provide feedback, and support your application journey.
Tips for Your Academic Journey
Joining LBS with a non-traditional background can feel intimidating since some of your peers may have studied business in their undergraduate programmes. Here are two strategies that worked well for me:
- Embrace the Learning Curve: While the material covered in class may be new to you, it’s a chance to learn even more. Take it as an opportunity to grow and challenge yourself.
- Collaborate with Your Peers: Your classmates form part of a great support system. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if they’ve covered certain concepts before. Personally, I regularly study with my peers, which not only helps me understand new ideas but also strengthens our relationships.
Last Words
I hope you found these tips helpful! If you have any questions or would like further advice, feel free to reach out to me via email. I’m always happy to support prospective students.
Best of luck on your journey, and I hope to see you at LBS soon!
