Maura Bonini, Recruitment and Admissions Manager, shares her experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community at London Business School. Maura reflects on the importance of feeling a sense of belonging and being able to bring her authentic self to work, as well as the importance of visibility and allyship within the LBS community. Through her experiences, she offers insight into how LBS fosters an environment where individuals can thrive and feel a true sense of belonging.

I’ve been out for a while – professionally and personally – I led the PRIDE Committee at my previous university, I have implemented LGBTQIA+ Recruitment and Yield efforts for graduate and undergraduate students, I’ve explained pansexuality to my grandma, (“Well, lots more options that way.” was her ever-diplomatic response) – I’ve done it all.
That being said, when I relocated to London and started at LBS, I had a moment of hesitation… in addition to starting a new role, I was moving to an entirely new country with a whole new work culture. How would people react to an openly bisexual woman in the office? I found myself questioning whether coming out at work would be a positive addition to my professional life.
Now, this was all prior to setting foot on LBS’ campus as an employee. I was immediately welcomed with open arms, and my first work social experience was with Proud. I met some amazing folks that day who I still see regularly, and got to go to a Be At One for the first time! (And probably last if we’re being honest). The environment of openness, authenticity and connection that permeates through the LBS staff and community is potent. (Sometimes, maybe a little TOO potent – we were having a team social at karaoke where there ~ happened ~ to also be a bisexual dating event happening, and when I was hesitant, one of them put on my nametag, my director gave me a pep talk, and out I went. JK of course, I loved this).

Almost a year later, I can’t imagine my life without the Proud Network here at LBS and the true love and acceptance I’ve felt from every person on campus. As a new member of the Proud Committee, I’m so excited to continue to expand networking and learning opportunities in conjunction with Out in Business.
