From Tango to Trade: My Global Experience in Argentina

By Snehal, MBA2025

London Business School (LBS) is renowned for its emphasis on experiential learning, one of the key reasons I chose it. While I often reflect on this aspect, the highlights of my journey consistently tie back to what initially drew me to LBS. My two weeks in Argentina as part of the Global Experience (GE) were a perfect testament to this, offering another unforgettable chapter in my MBA adventure.

As MBAs, we were privileged to explore several unique global locations, each paired with city-relevant economic themes. From Johannesburg’s focus on sustainable development to Paris’ exploration of luxury markets, the choices were as diverse and inspiring. My decision to head to Argentina was driven by its intriguing economic narrative and resilience in the face of significant challenges (theme: managing through crisis and volatility). In Buenos Aires, I immersed myself in the topic of economic reformation. Our journey began with a crash course in Argentina’s modern history by Professor Lorenzo Preve, providing vital context for the nation’s complex past and present. Collaborative sessions with IAE Business School students deepened the experience as we tackled local economic challenges and brainstormed solutions.

Sessions with Diana Mondino, a leading economist and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, painted a picture of Argentina’s ongoing efforts to open its economy to the world. From trade liberalisation to foreign investments, I learned how this dynamic nation grapples with its past to shape its future. A visit to Barrio Mugica was particularly impactful. It revealed how something as simple as having an address can transform lives, offering identity, access, and empowerment. This experience deeply connected us to the local community and fostered a sense of empathy.

GE would only be complete with soaking in the culture, and Argentina didn’t disappoint. From the electric atmosphere of a River Plate football match to the rhythm of Tango lessons, every moment was infused with the soul of the nation. Sampling local delicacies like dulce de leche, a sweet caramel spread, empanadas, and savoury pastries filled with meat or cheese reminded me how deeply food ties us to culture. The summer carnival added a kaleidoscope of colour and energy to our city tour, a vivid reflection of the diversity and vibrancy of Argentinian life.

Even after the official GE concluded, my Argentinian adventure continued. Hiking to Mt Fitzroy in Patagonia, standing in awe of the colossal Perito Moreno Glacier, and spotting penguins at Ushuaia – the southernmost city on Earth – were experiences that left an indelible mark on me. Seeing the guanaco, a cousin of my favourite llama, was just the cherry on top of a week of unparalleled exploration.

The GE was a transformative experience that reshaped my perspectives. It reminded me that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It’s about connecting global themes to local challenges, collaborating with peers and locals alike, and stepping out of our comfort zones to experience the world firsthand. Argentina taught me resilience, creativity, and the power of community. Argentina was nothing short of extraordinary.
