Highlights of the LBS Sloan 2019 so far

by Linden Selby, Senior Admissions Manager, Sloan & EMBA-Global

The LBS Sloan class of 2019 cannot believe that their first term is already winding down. A great term with exceptional faculty according to the LBS Sloan Fellows who have been balancing courses, an extensive programme of personal and professional development and family lunches, dinners and a tour of London with a blue badge guide.

Two favourite sessions were “Finding your tribe” reflecting on and understanding “culture messages” in organisations to understand where you will thrive.  There was an interesting thread about money, and that the financial package is important but the real test is whether you are somewhere you can truly achieve your goals. With a HR expert and an organisational psychologist, this was just one of the sessions in a busy term – but one with impact. In another session, LBS Sloan Fellows worked on Interview Skills with a forensic deconstruction of interview structures, as well as sampling interview questions at Executive level, sparking a lot of debate.

Some of you will be getting emails inviting you to interview in the coming weeks. LBS Sloan Fellows often say that it has been a long time since they had to interview – so here are some of our tips:

  • We’re on your side. Every application is carefully read to understand the value you will bring to a class and how you will benefit as well as contribute. All the things that got you to the interview mean that we already want you to succeed.
  • Be prepared to ask questions. We like candidates that are curious and it is natural to have doubts or want to explore further.
  • Be yourself. Of course you will think of questions you might be asked and it’s great to think about how you will respond – but don’t over-prepare – leave room for your personality to shine through.

If you want to be well prepared as an applicant for the next deadline on 28 May, we have a great variety of ways to support you: one-to-one coffee chats, class visits, CV reviews to discuss your background and goals, and your starting point is to contact our Recruitment team.
