By Vivian Zhang (MAM2025)
Growing up in China, I’ve always been passionate about technology and its applications in the financial world. Unlike many LBS students, coming to LBS marks my first international study experience, as I was previously educated entirely within the Chinese education system. When I started my journey toward applying to MAM, I knew I wanted a programme that would allow me to blend technical skills with strategic management insights. My background in Computer Science gave me a solid technical foundation, but I sought to leverage that with more business acumen to transition into the finance world, focusing on data-driven decision-making.
Research and Exploration
The first step in my journey was extensive research into LBS’s master’s programmes. I explored the curriculum, events, and career reports to gain a clearer picture. I specifically sought a programme with strong industry connections and a balance between theory and practical application, and LBS’s MAM programme fit those criteria perfectly. I was particularly drawn to its emphasis on real-world experience, including LondonLAB and Global Experience.
Interactions with LBS Staff and Alumni
Engaging with LBS’s current students and alumni played a crucial role in my decision. I know my networking skills were not as strong, but the LBS application process encouraged me to take that first step. I reached out to student ambassadors who shared a similar background and career interests, and also pursuing a MAM degree. Conversations with them revealed how the MAM programme had opened doors to diverse industries – many had transitioned successfully into consulting, tech, and finance, which was a key motivation for me.
I tried to gather as much information as possible from the Internet, and actively reached out to LBS alumni, most of whom were incredibly helpful and responsive.
The Application Process
The application process itself was challenging but manageable. My key advice here is to start early and engage with the admissions team. I reached out to LBS to clarify my questions on essays and the interview process, and their support was invaluable. I also recommend leveraging student ambassadors and alumni networks to get a more personal understanding of what the school offers. For me, structuring my essays to highlight not only my technical skills but also my teamwork and leadership experiences was essential. LBS highly values diversity, so I made sure to reflect on my experiences working with international students and building strong relationships with different people.
After receiving interview invitation, I started researching my interviewer, who happened to be an MFA alumni. Usually, LBS interviewers have a similar background to you but sometimes you may meet someone from a different field. Most of the time, interviews are face-to-face. For me, the interviewing process was totally different from other schools. It felt more like a casual coffee chat with an alumnus, allowing us to get to know each other better. Despite being nervous at first, the conversation flowed naturally, and I was able to build a solid connection with my interviewer, with whom I’m still in contact today.
Securing a place at LBS required deep reflection on my career goals and how the MAM programme aligned with them, which I believe is the most important aspect of the application. In the essay, you should clarify your career goals and divide them into short-term and long-term goals. This not only shows your insights into your career path but also demonstrates that you’ve thoroughly researched the field, making your goals realistic and practical.
Tips for Future Applicants:
Start Networking Early: Attend events and reach out to ambassadors and alumni. These interactions not only provide invaluable insights but also help you understand if the programme aligns with your aspirations.
Start applying whenever you’re ready: I received my GRE score in my third year but spent too much time perfecting my essays, which led to me missing the first round of applications.
Leverage Feedback: Get feedback on your essays and interview practice from peers or alumni. Having another perspective can greatly improve your application and also build your confidence. LBS’s interview process is one of the most challenging, but preparing for it also gives you a deeper understanding of the MAM programme.
Looking back, I’m glad I chose LBS. It’s not just about the education—it’s about the global network, the collaborative environment, and the exposure to real-world business challenges. The journey from prospect to student has been incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed my decision to join a school that fosters both personal and professional growth.
